She said, “It’s still this pain that I’m feeling.”

And then she turned to him and feigned a smile.

“I don’t know if it’s just this pain that you’re feeling

or if it’s scars upon your eyes.”

“if you’re going, please go now,and don’t

walk all over me again.

Can’t you see that it’s me who’s feeling something

only I can feel?”

He thought about her words

and implored deep within himself

about this pain that she’s been feeling,

about the heart of gold he’s been stealing,

about the wounds that need healing.

There are scars, that’s for sure,

but they’ve positioned themselves

upon her eyes,

so that she may never see him

the way she used to see him

before the pain came

and washed itself

all over what used to be.
